Happy Sabbath Day!

Happy Sabbath Day! Did you know that Sabbath Day is a very important and special event in Jewish people’s lives? But did you also know that there are many things we should know more about! Here are these things!

Happy Shabbat Day! But what is the Sabbath?

What is the Sabbath?

The Sabbath is the day of the Lord, it is set apart each week for solemn and peaceful rest and worship. During the Old Testament, the covenant of God observed the Sabbath on the seventh day of the week because God rested on the seventh day when He had created the earth. It was in Genesis 2:2 that it was made mention. After which, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which had occurred on the first day of the week, as stated in Mark 16:2, the Lord’s disciples began observing the Sabbath on the first week, as seen on Acts 20:7.

The Lord emphasized the significance of Sabbath observance in the Ten Commandments when He said, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” Exodus 20:8-11. The Savior Himself kept the Sabbath day holy during his mortal life, according to Matthew 12:9-13; Luke 4:16; John 5:9)

The Lord said to Moses that Sabbath day observance was a symbol of the covenant between Him and His great people and that if they would keep it holy, they would know Him as their Lord and God, as seen in Exodus 31:31 and Ezekiel 20:20.

In the revelation given to Joseph Smith in the year 1831, the Lord had commanded:

That thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world, thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up thy sacraments upon my holy day; for verily this is a day appointed unto you to rest from your labors, and to pay the devotions unto the Highest” as seen in the Doctrine and Covenants 59:9-10

In harmony with this revelation, Church members seek to keep the Sabbath day as holy as possible at Church and at home. At Church, members actively participate in the sacred ordinance of the sacrament, which Jesus has instituted at the Last Supper when He visited the Nephites, as seen in Mathew 26:26-28; Luke 22:19, 3 Nephi 18:1-12. While at home, members participate in uplifting activities that help them learn the Gospel, strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ, build strong and unbreakable family relations, and provide holy service.

Through taking a solid part in these activities at Church and at home, members can establish family traditions that will help prosper multigenerational branches among families who are faithful to the Lord our God and who call the Sabbath a delight, as accorded in Isaiah 58:13-14.

How do you celebrate the Sabbath?

We celebrate the Sabbath in many different ways, as long as it is within our human instincts, we can share the Holy day with the Church, with the family, and even with your friends! Here are the things you can do to celebrate the Sabbath day!

Go to the Church – you can take a Sunday walk going to the Church! As God stated in Romans 12:5, going to church is for our own good, God wants us in fellowship with other believers. We need each other to grow up in faith, to learn how to serve, to love each other, to exercise our spiritual blessings, and to preach forgiveness. All we are individuals, God sees us as one and together.

Read the Scriptures – after reading the Scriptures, create a Gospel quote book! You can even share it on social media for more reach and a wider holy impact! In each part of our reading, we see God’s holy, unchanging, faithful, gracious, and loving character, and that is worth sharing.

Say Prayers, Spend Extra Time in Meditation – prepare the family in the home for evening prayers and attend Sunday meetings together! Did you know that prayer helps regulate your heartbeat, thus making it stronger and less stressed? Plus, you help yourself and your loved one develop a closer relationship with God.

Have Family Time – work on faith in God, the duty to God, or personal progress with your family! This will not just improve progress between you and your family relationships, you can build more memories together instead! Thus, family emotional ties are made firmer.

Serve Others – plan a random act of kindness, draw pictures and deliver to elderly people in your neighborhood, read the scriptures, and talk! Write down what you have learned, secretly decorate someone’s front door with notes of appreciation! Helping others is a good action to maintain, create and strengthen peace among social connections. You can create a sense of belonging, new friends, and connection among communities just by serving others.

Write Letters – write a thank you letter to some who inspired or helped you this week, look through family or friends’ pictures that you can add, and attach it with! Treat someone today after giving your letter! Writing a letter gives you exactly the chance to say exactly what you want to say to the best of your ability. It will help you heal and express yourself.

Write in a journal – write down your thoughts as you ponder or discern and clear your mind to be prepared for the next hurdles and challenges in your life! Put all your trust in the Lord God, and let Him do all His plans according to his will. With this, you become more clear and understood even just by yourself.

Visit the Sick – call someone who is sick or visit them with encouragement and good foods they can eat to bring back their health or help them regain energy. Share your happiness with them today by telling them you are with them, assure them and make them feel your warmth by providing them positive feelings that can help them fight their sickness and get well soon.

Rest – Take a bath and relax! You can clean the house, prepare food, set out your clothes and your children’s clothes the night before and donate them after, you can also set the table with pretty candlelights but after that, you can take a rest! By resting, you can help restore a sense of calm during your times of exhaustion, illness, or distress. You can heal your body.

Celebrating the Sabbath day may differ from our traditions but we must keep in mind that the Sabbath day is a day and time devoted to Him. Rest in the Lord! Study the Word. Pray! Enjoy the beauty of His creation. This is your time of rest!
